FAQ FOR EQUIPMENT & SAFETY
-
Surfskating is a creative movement that mimics the smooth, rhythmic movements of surfing — but without needing water. Instead of pushing with your foot, you generate momentum by pumping your body side to side, like carving on a wave.
-
No, our wheels are designed to be floor-safe. We use Carver Roundhouse 68MM 78A soft wheels, which are grippy and smooth, not hard like traditional skateboard wheels. They’re made of high-quality urethane that won’t scratch, scuff, or leave marks on polished gym floors, concrete, or sport surfaces.
-
Yes! As long as there’s a smooth, open space such as a gymnasium, rec center, or community room, surfskating works beautifully indoors. The soft wheels and compact turning radius of our boards make it quiet, safe, and space-efficient. KV33 focuses on flat ground beginner progression.
-
We use Carver Surfskate boards with CX truck systems, known for their smooth pumping motion and stability.
Each board is sized for the age group. i.e shorter boards for kids and longer decks for teens or adults, to ensure comfort and control.
The Founder, Emily Adams, tested out different trucks/boards to find out which one would be the best for our classes. Carver CX was the winner! Emily does carry a YOW Meraki board and a Carver C7 board that could be used for private sessions depending on the participant’s individual goals.

Surfskating and skateboarding may look similar at first glance, but the movement, equipment, and intention are completely different.
Movement & Body Mechanics:
In skateboarding, riders typically push with one foot to gain speed and perform tricks like ollies or flips. In surfskating, riders generate motion by carving and pumping, using their body weight and core — much like surfing on a wave. It’s fluid, rhythmic, and great for balance and coordination.
Board Design:
Surfskates use a special front truck that pivots and rotates to allow deep carving turns. KV33 Swell uses Carver CX systems, which are designed to mimic the feel of surfing while maintaining stability and control. Traditional skateboards have fixed trucks, making them better for tricks but less ideal for fluid surf-style motion.
Program Focus:
KV33 Swell’s classes focus on flow, balance, mindfulness, and self-expression — not tricks. Students learn how to move with control, connect breath to motion, and build confidence through mindful movement.
Tricks & Progression:
While we don’t teach traditional skateboarding tricks in our youth classes, private surfskate sessions can include advanced techniques — like slides or aerial maneuvers — once a rider has mastered balance and flow.
Surfskating bridges the worlds of surfing, skating, and movement training, making it accessible, empowering, and safe for beginners of all ages.
-
Yes. All helmets, pads, and surfskate gear are sanitized between classes, and our equipment is inspected weekly to ensure maximum safety and performance.
-
Yes! Our surfskates are chosen for their stability and ease of learning. We start students on slower, balanced setups with soft bushings and wide decks, helping them feel confident right away.
-
The Carver CX truck combines a responsive front pivot with a stable rear truck, allowing riders to simulate the same flowing, carving motion of surfing — but on land. It’s ideal for beginners because it’s more balanced and less twitchy than other surfskate systems, helping students learn proper stance, weight transfer, and surf-style turns safely.
-
Surfskating originated in Southern California in the 1990s, created by Carver Skateboards founders Neil Carver and Greg Falk. Their goal was to capture the feeling of surfing even on flat land. Today, surfskating is used worldwide for surf training, fitness, balance, and mindfulness — and it’s perfect for introducing youth to movement and flow.
